The Ancient Ways of the Adityas

What are the Adityas?

Aditya means “of Diti” and Diti is “the divine mother”. The 12 Adityas are solar deities, each spanning 30 degrees, and they represent our essence. The Adityas are basically the love of the Sun expressed in 12 different ways, and there are six “beings” who travel with each Aditya. They help us understand the solar deities more profoundly, and one type of essential being is the Rishi (sage), who uphold a particular natural law of love.

The Jaimini descriptions of the Zodiac signs do not lose their meaning with the Adityas. In fact, they complement each other. Additionally, your Tropical Vedic Astrology house placements and planetary aspects are the same in your Aditya chart. But what changes is that the planets move forward one sign, and because of this, the dignities of the planets are often altered.

Why I Like the Adityas

Personally, I’ve found that my Aditya chart resonates more deeply than my Tropical chart. For instance, my Tropical chart places my Moon in Vishnu (Scorpio), which is a sign focused on transformation and battling inner demons. While I still connect with Vishnu's energy (which makes sense, given that a different planet is positioned there now), my mind doesn't fixate on those dark, inner struggles. Instead, my Moon's placement in Amshu (Sagittarius) in my Aditya chart resonates more. It perfectly reflects my nature as a truth-seeker who is constantly striving to evolve and improve every day. Also, this ancient knowledge has already helped me have even more clarity in terms of the direction of my life and how to get unstuck.

Another thing that I like about the Adityas is that they provide significantly more in-depth spiritual descriptions of each portion of the sky. Since these solar deities reveal if an individual is truly living out their life in a spiritually aligned way based on the unique expression of love of that Aditya, we have a clear guide that shows us how to be aligned with the healthier version of ourselves.

Do the Aditiyas Affect the Cards of Truth?

Because your planets in the Cards of Truth (COT) chart correspond with your astrological chart, your COT chart is also different with this new Aditya system. They go hand in hand. The Kala program that I have access to at home includes the Aditya changes to the Cards of Truth System. As of June 2026, there isn't a public COT generator with the Aditya changes that I'm aware of.

Brief Description of the Adityas (If you have planets in any of these Adityas, the description of the Aditya should resonate depending on the strength of the planet, its dignity, and its lajjitaadi avasthas.)

  1. Dhata (Ruled by Mars)- Dhata is the fire and strength of the true, intelligent Self. When the foundation of a person’s life is strong, it helps to create a strong sense of individuality. When an individual is strong in who they are, they are able to bear and support life consistently until that being is self-sufficient. Dhata is like a mother figure who is supportive and protective of her family. People with Dhata healthy in their charts understand that there are times when they need to be responsible for others who need their strength, and also they accept support when they need it. However, if afflicted, they’ll want others to support and protect them, and they’ll avoid bearing the burden of supporting/protecting others.

  1. Aryama (Ruled by Venus)- Representing responsibility and stability, this Aditya is about providing a foundation that helps concretely to support others. Aryama is the epitome of long-term companionship and commitments on which we can build a reliable foundation. Those who have healthy planets here contribute to others, and this gives a person a sense of value and self-worth. When healthy, a person isn’t greedy with their wealth and instead is very generous and distributes their resources where needed. However, when there are afflicted planets here, an individual can be selfish with their resources and can struggle with relationships.

  1. Mitra (Ruled by Mercury)- Mitra means friend and friendship, and represents the social circle that is all-inclusive. But unlike Aryama, these aren’t necessarily long-term friends/partners. There’s an understanding that there’s a give-and-take with friendships, and if you continuously give to a particular friend and you never get anything back in return from them, it’s okay because you will receive something in the form of a different friend. Individuals with Mitra strong in their charts view the world as a friend, and because of this, this Aditya is open to learning and having new experiences wherever they go. However, when Mitra is afflicted, an individual will struggle with being open to life and recognizing that there is potential friendship in every moment.

  1. Varuna (Ruled by the Moon)- Varuna, meaning “all-encompassing sky”, is the God of the ocean of the collective consciousness. This Aditya has a strong spiritual/psychic force that can give an individual the ability to manifest what’s in their consciousness and get rid of distractions as they seek the truth. This is why Varuna supports meditation. Also, because this deity represents all-encompassing love, people with this Aditya have loving qualities. However, when a person focuses their attention on their desires, which are the needs of their wounds, they often end up feeling so unfulfilled. It’s essential to develop one’s consciousness and connection to inner fulfillment when there are planets here.

  1. Indra (Ruled by the Sun)- This noble aditya represents the fire of a person’s true Self.  Indra uses his will and strength to manifest his inspirations. With a healthy amount of self-love, individuals with healthy planets in Indra in their charts do things that make them happy and will reap the rewards of their efforts. Because they have an inner power/force within, they’re capable of making things happen. When there are afflicted planets here, an individual will want to appear great and will try to prove themselves due to a lack of confidence and self-love. They’ll struggle admitting to themselves or others their shortcomings.

  1. Vivasvan (Ruled by Mercury)- Planets in this Aditya give a great capacity for clear thinking, but because there’s an excessive amount of pointed focus, there will be a lot of other things that the individual will miss. But because a person with Vivasvan strong in their chart has a great capacity to consume and understand knowledge, they’ll most likely be a specialist of some sort and will be extremely useful in their field. Also, this Aditya is invested in the advancement of mankind and often makes sacrifices and compromises to be useful to others. Also, because Mercury, the ruler of this Aditya, is about following rules, people with Vivasvan healthy in their charts will follow the rules and laws in their culture healthily. If this Aditya is afflicted, one can be a lawbreaker or someone who isn’t fair to others.

  1. Tvasta (Ruled by Venus)- Tvasta is the divine architect who is the creator of all things, particularly buildings, vehicles, divine weapons, and all of the things that are needed. Individuals who have this Aditya strong in their natal charts are intelligent & intuitive innovators who see possibilities and create solutions to problems. When Tvasta is healthy in a chart, a person is charitable because they want to provide what’s needed. Also, this is an Aditya that has to do with trading valuable services with others and getting something valuable in return that’s been agreed upon. However, when afflicted, an individual doesn’t want to give because they don’t feel they have something worth giving or there’s an imbalance in the services exchanged.

  1. Vishnu (Ruled by Mars)- Vishnu is all things manifested of the divine, and Mars is the conscious, intelligent energy that changes forms but has no beginning or end. This Aditya is about what lies below the surface of each form, and that is the indestructible divine force that lives within everything in existence. The form is just an illusion and does not actually exist. A person with this Aditya strong in their charts understands that even chaotic, unjust, and unexpected events are really operating in perfect divine order. Vishnu is about transforming pain/darkness into self-awareness and divine connection. Individuals with this Aditya afflicted have trouble grasping that everything is divine energy. Instead of understanding that painful and scary events in life are nudging us to connect to spiritual awareness, they get scared and want to cling to material things, such as a job, a home, a relationship, etc., which are illusions. When we understand that everything/everyone is the divine manifested in different forms that help us evolve, we realize that we’re safe and everything is okay.

  1. Amshu (Ruled by Jupiter)- Amshu represents the creative fire that comes out of you and creates a new form. Amshu means “a ray,” which is a portion of the Sun that illuminates whatever it hits. Whatever the ray shines upon, it endows it with its intelligence. When this Aditya is strong and healthy in a natal chart, an individual is aware of their own light, inspiration, and purpose. When there are afflictions in this sign, a person is searching for their purpose and has trouble living as themselves. Amshu is about doing something at our highest level of creative potential, feeling good about ourselves, being illuminated, and full of life and joy. Additionally, this Aditya is about finding spiritual Truths in this cosmic drama.

  1. Bhaga (Ruled by Saturn)- Bhaga is the dispenser of fortune based on what a person has merited. Earning our fair share is contingent upon our contribution and how much we’re exerting our will. This grounded Aditya rewards with tangible things. Those with Bhaga healthy in their natal charts understand that the material rewards are not just for the individual but to help support others. They can do great things and have lots of power because they’re responsible and they commit to things with discipline. When Bhaga is afflicted, a person strives to gain material possessions for selfish reasons or can have a hard time using their will and being disciplined. It’s through our vows and discipline that we move forward in life and receive blessings for our hard work and effort.

  1. Puusa (Ruled by Saturn)- This simple Aditya doesn’t need a lot to be nourished and only takes what is needed. Puusa is considered the greatest Sudra or servant of all of the Adityas. He nourishes everything as an act of selfless service. A guru is a servant to whom he/she dispenses the truth. Puusa represents a guide on the journey of life, where we can encounter drought/lack, but we have to find what makes life worth living. Puusa is aware of the pitfalls and will guide and protect us. On a profound level, Puusa is about negating material things and desires so that we can have spiritual nourishment. When this Aditya is healthy, the individual thinks of others first, but when unhealthy, they want all the nourishment and can be picky eaters. They’ll also want others to serve them, and they’ll feel an inner lack.

  1. Parjanya (Ruled by Jupiter)- Parjanya is the rain God. Rain symbolizes God’s consciousness raining down on an individual. It’s the deepest nourishment. This spiritual Aditya helps things flow by removing things that are in the way. If we want to manifest something, our consciousness needs to be free from blockages. People with Parjanya strong in their charts can work through their issues and blockages, as Parjanya is about emotional, mental, and physical health. Additionally, he wants things to grow, such as plants, people, consciousness, and so on. A person with this Aditya, strong and healthy in their natal charts, will grow things in their consciousness, which is rain/water. When afflicted, an individual will struggle to feel connected to a higher power and their purpose. Also, they can feel stuck emotionally, mentally, or physically due to blockages in their consciousness.
