Studying ancient compatibility techniques has been one of my favorite astrological topics. I used to think compatibility just meant that two people shared similar values and communication abilities and were sexually harmonious. But there’s much more to analyzing the bond between two complex individuals, and ancient techniques uncover unique and hidden dynamics in couples.
A compatibility reading can help us understand the relationship dynamic between a romantic couple because it can shine a light on what’s working in the partnership, foresee potential challenges, and provide more awareness so that we can see the bigger picture in terms of why things are happening spiritually.
Vedic astrological compatibility is primarily based on each person’s Moon because the Moon, a social planet, shows if the energy flows harmoniously or inharmoniously between a couple. The Moon represents our likes and dislikes, what we’re comfortable with, and how we get our inner needs met. Further, the Moon is the manas or the mind in which the idea of separate existences is formed through our perception. The Moon represents the small things we need to make us feel good, such as the right stimulation, food, and environment. It’s pivotal that partners get their needs met in similar ways so that they feel good when they’re spending time together.

There are a myriad of intriguing Vedic compatibility techniques that not only use the twelve signs of the Moon but also the nakshatras, which are found in ancient Vedic texts such as the Mahabharata. The 27 nakshatras, also known as lunar mansions, are deities that are said to be the wives of the Moon. The Moon, being fickle and adaptable, spends a little over a day in each nakshatra as he makes his rounds in each of his wives’ homes. The nakshatra signs are completely independent of the zodiac's 12 signs.
In Vedic astrology, we use the Ashta Kutas to look at eight different factors when comparing the Moons between partners, and each one is worth a certain number of points. The possible amount of points is 36, but a couple needs at least 20 points to be considered compatible. There are some flexible exceptions to this rule. The more compatibility points between a couple, the better because this shows that they’re on the same wavelength and the energy flows well between them. The following points contain brief descriptions of some of the lunar compatibility techniques:
1. Each nakshatra has an animalistic characteristic known as the Yoni, which shows how we react unconsciously when we’re in a life-threatening situation. We want the yonis between charts to be at least somewhat compatible because when a couple reacts to a crisis harmoniously, that can bring them closer together. If they react inharmoniously, however, it can be a major hang-up in the relationship. For example, if a couple’s child dies and they both react by retreating, then they understand each others’ way of coping, and that can bring them even closer together. However, if one partner reacts to the tragedy by retreating and the other by cracking jokes, then that could be something that puts even more pressure on the relationship.
2. The Graha Maitram shows the planetary friendship of each person’s Moon. Based on the sign of the Moons, the Moons are either friends, neutral, or inimical to one another. When a couple’s Moons are friendly towards each other, this can help the couple to be on a similar wavelength, and they’ll be able to spend more time with each other. For example, friendly Moons help the couple be interested in similar things, such as wanting to both be adventurous or wanting to decorate their home similarly.
3. Nadi or vein Kuta shows the temperament based on the three humors: wind, fire, and water. Each nakshatra is either a wind, fire, or water element. It may seem counterintuitive at first, but we don’t want the nakshatras to have the same element because the couple will have too much of that element, and it can cause problems. For example, too much wind can cause digestive issues, an excessive amount of water can cause weight gain, and too much fire can cause frustration and anger. By having different temperaments, a couple can have more balance in their relationship.
There are a lot more interesting techniques not mentioned in this blog, such as seeing if a couple is getting together for the right reasons or not or if there’s a symbolic rope between their Moons that makes the couple bound by misfortunes that arise out of the blue.
