The Moon Through The Houses

Characteristics of the Moon

In many of my blog posts, I write about the Moon because it’s one of the most important planets. We calculate the Moon for a myriad of techniques, such as the compatibility between two people, and for determining an auspicious time for an important event. Further, the Moon represents our emotions and adapts to various situations to feel comfortable and happy. It reflects our innate nature and our behavior, which is based on what’s in our consciousness.

Because the Moon represents our environment, it reflects our mother, homelife, and early upbringing in general, which shows what we’re accustomed to. If, as a child, we weren’t used to getting our needs met, we’ll be drawn to situations, environments, and relationships where we’ll be lacking something emotionally. On the other hand, if we were used to our mother smothering us more kisses, milk, and pampering than what we needed, then perhaps we’ll expect that the world will give us what we need more often than not. However, this can set us up for disappointments at times because we can’t expect happiness from outside of ourselves. Ideally, a child receives a balanced amount of nurturing without getting too spoiled or feeling deprived.

Like the phases of the Moon, where it waxes and wanes, this luminary is about finding happiness through growth. The Moon has its dark side, so there are aspects of our Moon that are mysterious, but this makes this planet so interesting. The opposite of the Moon is the Sun, which is extroverted and shows how we show up in the world, whereas the Moon exemplifies what makes us feel good, how we get our inner needs met, and our likes and dislikes.

The phenomenal thing about the Moon is that it has no enemies according to Parashara, but it can still be starved or ashamed when the Moon is with certain planets, based on the lajjitaadi avasthas.

There’s another thing that we need to consider when it comes to judging the Moon, and that’s finding out if it’s waxing or waning. With a waxing Moon, it’s easier to build on your life. With a waning Moon, the Moon gives you something, but then you have to let go of something else. So you don’t build upon the same foundation as you do with the waxing Moon. There’s much more to discuss about the Moon than what I can write about in this blog post. For a more detailed description of your Moon, I highly recommend looking at my other blog posts/YouTube videos or booking a reading with me.

How to find the Moon in your astrological chart

To find the house in which your Moon is located, you’ll need your correct birth time because this ndicates where the houses fall in our charts. In some countries, such as the United States, you’ll find your time of birth on your birth certificate.

Please visit the following website to generate your South Indian natal chart: https://vaultoftheheavens.com/VOTH_ChartCreator/Welcome.aspx.

Next, enter your birth information, and in your chart, you’ll find two thin diagonal lines next to each other in a particular sign. Those lines represent your ascendant or the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment you were born.

If the Moon is in the same sign as your ascendant, then great! This means that the Moon is in your first house. But if the Moon is not on the ascendant, count how many houses (represented by squares) away the Moon is from the first house, by counting the first house first. Keep in mind that I practice whole sign and whole house Vedic astrology. See the example below.

An image of the South Indian birth chart

In the example to the right, the ascendant is in the sign of Gemini, abbreviated Ge, and if we count the first house as number one, then the second house from the ascendant is Cancer, the third house from the ascendant is Leo, and so on. In the example, the Moon, abbreviated Mo, is in the 12th house from the ascendant. In the example, I've included the houses from the ascendant using big black numbers.

If you’re a bit confused, the small house cusp numbers that you see in most or all of the signs or squares in the program may or may not correspond with the house the Moon is in from the ascendant using the whole sign, whole house method. In our example, the Moon’s cusp is connected to the 11th house cusp, but it’s in the 12th house for the Moon. In some charts, there may be more than one house cusp in a sign, none at all, or a different house cusp than when counting from the ascendant. We use house cusps for predictions, so for the sake of finding the house to understand in what area the Moon affects our life and personality, we are counting the houses from the ascendant.

The Moon Through the Houses

The houses show the specific ways in which the Moon feels comfortable. The Moon reflects our personality and is naturally more comfortable in certain houses. In either case, in whatever sign or house our Moon is located, it’s going to help us grow in the way we’re meant to grow.  Keep in mind that the fulfillment of the Moon comes from within, and not from external circumstances.

In Vedic astrology, each planet has what’s called dig bala, or directional strength, meaning that planets become stronger when in a certain house (and surrounding ones) than others. The dig bala of the Moon is the 4th house, which is a private house that allows one to reflect and feel at home in their environment.

  • 1st house- In a woman’s chart, this is good because the Moon is a feminine planet, and it will make a woman more feminine in her actions and sweet in speech, kind, and easy to get along with. Also, she’ll appear to be non-judgmental, delightful, and charismatic.

In a male's chart, this shows that his desires and intentions are going to be relatively aligned. Not only will he know his mind, but this Moon placement will also give him a bit of gentleness. At first glance, he won’t seem super masculine because the Moon is a feminine planet. This placement can give a man a go-with-the-flow and adaptable personality.

  • 2nd house- This helps a person to connect to their needs and get their needs met. A person takes care of things, and this makes a person happy. An individual can attract money and resources to help them take care of these things, but it doesn’t give them extra money to squander. The things we take care of will generally take care of us in return. This can help a person increase their self-worth because they feel useful and get their needs met in return.

  • 3rd house- A person will find themselves doing difficult things, focusing on learning, or developing a skill. As long as they focus on these things and overcome them, they’ll find satisfaction because they developed something or grew in the process. They can adapt to the challenges at hand to get their needs met when the Moon is solid in their chart.

  • 4th house-  The Moon has dig bala, or directional strength here. Dig bala gives the Moon more power to produce happiness and adaptability to get their needs met. This is a private house that allows one to reflect and feel at home in their environment.  Generally, a person with their Moon here doesn’t need to go outside of themselves to feel happy. This helps them to feel good about themselves and be able to connect to his/her first feelings. They’re responsive and can readily connect to the feminine side.

  • 5th house- The individual can readily create what’s in their consciousness. Their happiness is contingent upon their unique self-expression and their ability to have a focused mind to continuously do something that gives them success. They find happiness and luck when they lead an inspired and creative life.

  • 6th house- A person with their Moon placed here can get overworked and have too many burdens/stressors. On the other hand, they can be conscientious and productive in life. They may not be that focused on their creative pursuits because they’re focused on working hard and obtaining material fulfillment. However, the Moon is about obtaining emotional fulfillment. There can be a disconnect between what you feel and what you have to do, or you can be stuck doing things you’re not inclined to do.

  • 7th house- An individual’s happiness is connected to their relationship with others, especially their romantic relationship. They may look to get their needs met through their desires and by being social. A person with their Moon in the 7th house can have a knack for negotiating and creating win-win situations with others but need to be aware of how to tap into their inner fulfillment.

  • 8th house- An individual with their Moon in the 8th house tends to suffer more turbulence and the mind is pulled in different directions, making it hard to find happiness and inner growth. The individual is vulnerable to having ups & downs emotionally speaking and unexpected crises happen that can throw them off balance. Since this is a moksha house, a person can discover ways that liberate them from emotional distress, such as through astrology or psychology. There can be a disconnect between what you feel and what you have to do, or you can be stuck doing things you’re not inclined to do.

  • 9th house- This can make a person feel lucky at times because their consciousness aligns with their purpose. With an auspicious Moon in their chart, the Moon in the 9th house helps one to plan for long-term goals and to feel happy. Expanding/elevating your consciousness and philosophical perspective is extremely beneficial for you and can promote happiness. You can do this by traveling or sharing your vision.

  • 10th house- This can make a person socially conscious and take actions to fulfill their duties/responsibilities. If the Moon is solid, a person can find happiness in what they do in the world. At the same time, the Moon is in the opposite position as the 4th, where it has dig bala (directional strength). An individual’s happiness may be contingent upon their material accomplishments rather than their ability to adapt to their environment to achieve inner contentment. Again, the Moon finds happiness within, not outside of itself, which is based on one’s conditioned consciousness and ability to get their needs met.

  • 11th house- This can be a great place for a person to have success in life because this is the house of desires and gains. However, this is a social house, and the Moon is about finding inner fulfillment. This placement can make it so that there are more requirements that a person has to have to feel happy, because their happiness is contingent upon external factors instead of internal ones.

  • 12th house- A person may be contemplative and able to meditate, but this can also show up as a person who may try to escape the physical world. When the Moon is afflicted here, an individual may find contentment through sex, playing video games, taking drugs/alcohol, or engaging in other activities that take them away from dealing with the real world. If the Moon is strong, a person can be inclined to imagine a positive future and will more likely be able to be able to grow their consciousness.
