If you’re wondering how to find the houses of your planets using the Tropical Vedic Astrology whole sign, whole house system (what a mouthful!), then this is the blog post for you!
To find the houses in which your planets are located, you’ll need your correct birth time because this indicates where the houses fall in our charts. In some countries, such as the United States, you’ll find your time of birth on your birth certificate. One benefit of knowing our birth times is that it can indicate the sign that was rising on the eastern horizon the moment we were born, and that sign will be our first house or ascendant. This lets us know in which houses the rest of the signs fall. Each house cusp represents a specific area in life (see the keywords at the end of this blog).
Please visit the following website to generate your South Indian natal chart: https://vaultoftheheavens.com/VOTH_ChartCreator/Welcome.aspx.
Abbreviation guide:
Su= Sun
Mo= Moon
Ma= Mars
Me= Mercury
Ju= Jupiter
Ve= Venus
Sa= Saturn
Ra= Rahu
Ke= Ketu
*If you see an “R” after a planet, that signifies that it’s retrograde.
Next, enter your birth information, and in your chart, you’ll find a pair of thin diagonal lines in a sign. Those lines represent your ascendant.
If a planet in question is in the same sign as your ascendant, then great! This means that the planet is in your first house. But if it’s not on the ascendant, count how many houses (represented by squares) away it is from the first house, by counting the ascendant first.
Let’s use the Moon as an example. See below:

In the example to the right, the ascendant is in the sign of Gemini, abbreviated Ge, and if we count clockwise, the first house is number one, then the second house from the ascendant is Cancer, the third house from the ascendant is Leo, and so on. In the example, the Moon, abbreviated Mo, is in the 12th house from the ascendant. In the example, I've included the houses from the ascendant using big black numbers.
If you’re a bit confused, the small house cusp numbers that you see in most or all of the signs or squares in the program may or may not correspond with the house the planet is in from the ascendant using the whole sign, whole house method. In our example, the Moon’s cusp is connected to the 11th house cusp, but it’s in the 12th house from the ascendant. In some charts, there may be more than one house cusp in a sign, none at all, or a different house cusp than when counting from the ascendant.
We generally use house cusps for predictions, so for the sake of finding the house to understand in what area the planet affects our overall life and characteristics, we are counting the houses from the ascendant.
Below is a list of some of the keywords that describe each house:
1st House: Body, Path, the Self
2nd House: Responsibility, Resources, Family
3rd House: Communication, Skills, Short-Distance Trips
4th House: Home, Happiness, One’s Mother
5th House: Creative Intelligence, Children, Self-Expression
6th House: Health, Debt, Enemies
7th House: Relationships, The Public, Buying/Selling (Trade)
8th House: The Occult, Other People’s Money, Battles
9th House: One’s Parents, Beliefs, Luck
10th House: One’s Father, Dharma, Career
11th House: Desires, Income From Career, Groups/Networks
12th House: Last Wishes, Losses, Moksha (Liberation)
