Before I dive into each Sun Sign, let’s go over the occult symbolism of the Sun in our charts.
The Sun is one of the most important planets in our astrological chart. This luminary is one
of the planets that exemplifies who we are and shows how we take action in the world.
Also, it represents our unique individual essence along with our creative self-expression. This powerful planet also rules our vision and inspiration as we build our kingdom. A person’s kingdom could revolve around being a homemaker while another’s may have to do with owning a dance studio and teaching dance. The Sun shows what we’re born to do and as a result, we shine when we’re doing it. This makes us radiate and gives us the confidence to continue on our path. We make the world a better place because we’re aligning with our divine essence and we’re happy because of this. Imagine a world where everyone was doing what they love instead of waking up in the morning to go to a job they hate. When we’re not doing something that isn’t us, we may face health issues, feel out of place, and feel uninspired.
The Sun is also our dharma or the right actions we take. Dharma is the path of the Self. My teacher often repeats this quote in his lessons. It’s found in chapter 18, verse 47 from the Bhagavad Gita, “It is better to do one's own dharma, even though imperfectly, than to do another's dharma, even though perfectly.” Finding our unique path is essential and we do this through the Sun in our charts.
It’s said that everyone has a seed of God within them and we see that in the Sun, our soul or divine essence. Even if we have two people who are interior designers, they have different styles and approaches to their craft. Their unique lens of the world shines through them when they’re bringing beauty into the world.
The Sun is on a consistent path and similarly, it’s the thing that we can do consistently because we are that thing. How can we stop doing and being what we are? If you’re wondering what you shine in or what your career should be because the SU represents our career, contemplate what you’ve always been drawn to do. What do you wake up thinking about that inspires you?
When we have an afflicted Sun in our chart due to it being influenced by his enemies or out of balance by being conjunct Rahu or Ketu, there can be delays in finding one’s dharma. For example, a person may not know what career to go into, another may copy other people’s creative inspiration because they have a hard time channeling their own, they may lack the confidence to pursue what they want, they may work just to survive, and so on. The Sun is a crucial planet in our charts because if we’re not doing what inspires us, we can face health problems. It’s connected to the fire within us. Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for people to not follow their inspiration and be influenced by others about what they should or shouldn’t do, including me.
The Sun also represents our father or father figure who usually helps us to find our inner spark and go after it. A solid Sun is extremely noble and his actions come from the pure place of wanting to do good in the world. When we have an auspicious Sun in our charts, our father or father figure may guide us as we walk a righteous path.
Keep in mind, that there are no bad Sun sign placements. The Sun represents the divine light that shines through us.
Now I’ll define the characteristics of each Sun sign and I’ll address two of the stereotypes from each sign and why or why not they’re accurate. Keep in mind, we are so much more than our Sun signs and we should look at a person’s entire chart to learn more.
Also, I’ll mention the dignities when I speak about certain planets and signs. The exalted dignity is the highest dignity a planet can have, meaning that the planet is performing at its highest ability and exudes the highest quality and results. On the other hand, a debilitated planet is when it’s in a sign where it’s performing at
its lowest and the planet isn’t doing what it's meant to do.
Aries- The Sun is in an exalted dignity in this sign and does exceptionally well, even in the face of challenges with the Sun. Mars rules Aries. Why is Aries exalted in Mar’s sign? Mars is an action-oriented and fiery planet and has lots of energy to be creative and achieve its vision. Mars is the general and the Sun is the King. The King tells the general his plan for the kingdom and the general can execute his plan strategically and logically. The Sun and Mars are good friends and make a perfect pair. By having one’s Sun in Aries, a person can fight for the needs of the kingdom and they have a narrow focus. Nothing can stop a person who has their Sun in Aries as they fulfill their desired actions. This is a problem-solving sign that can fix anything in his kingdom/world and a person with their Sun in Aries can shine very brightly as they solve problems.
Stereotype #1- Aries can never finish anything. Aries is a cardinal sign, which initiates new things. People with this fiery sign can be great leaders and be good at coming up with new ideas and starting new projects. But a Sun with no afflictions to it is consistent. I don’t think this stereotype is necessarily true for a Sun in Aries person. A person with a strong Sun in this sign should be consistent on their path once they find their footing. They have a strong ability to generate new, inspiring, and creative projects consistently.
Stereotype #2- Aries people can’t shut up. This may be slightly true. To see how we think and communicate, though, we have to analyze our Mercury. Mercury is never too far away from the Sun, so about ⅓ of people with their Sun in Aries will also have their Mercury in Aries. Mercury in Aries people tend to be very talkative, unlike those with their Mercury in Scorpio who tend to think deeply and don’t talk much.
Taurus- This sign is ruled by Venus, which has to do with the external fulfillment we can get from the world such as relationships, food, massages, wine, cars, clothes, a home, and so on. Taurus also represents good quality things and things of value. They may admire the beauty in others and in what others do. Relationships can be especially important to people with their Sun in this sign. A challenge, however, may be to find their unique creative inspiration and to follow that consistently.
Stereotype #1- Taurus people are boring. I know quite a few people who have their Sun in this sign and I don’t consider them boring people. But I can sort of understand this because they may be enjoying the good things in life like food and comforts, while the rest of us watch.
Stereotype #2- Taurus people are lazy. Part of enjoying life is about taking a break from the crazy world and resting and relaxing. Venus is exalted in Pisces. Pisces is the sign that has to do with escaping real-world problems and a person with their Sun in Taurus may get inspiration in taking a break and enjoying the good life from time to time.
Gemini- Mercury rules this sign and it’s an air sign. Mercury is a communicative, sociable, skillful, and intelligent planet. Mercury is a curious planet that wants to have fun and interesting experiences. Also, in Vedic Astrology, Gemini is sometimes portrayed as a male and a female who are side-by-side, representing two opposing forces in nature. The male represents the destructive force and the female, the creative force. The purpose of this Sun sign is to harness these energies to their advantage and use their different abilities when appropriate.
Stereotype #1- Gemini people are two-faced. Some may believe this to be true because not only is Gemini a dual (mutable) sign because it’s both fixed and changeable (cardinal), but Mercury is the planet of Vishnu, who’s the manifestation of God in all things. So people with this Sun sign may be easily changeable and able to change their ways easily to mold to their environment. It’s a skill that Gemini has and can change who he is depending on the social situation because he’s connected to the universal experience.
Stereotype #2- This sign overthinks too much. Mercury represents all the possibilities in the world. Having one’s Sun in Gemini, a person can be exposed to different types of situations and may be aware of a plethora of possibilities. Because of this, they may overthink things when it comes to taking action. Also, because this is an air sign, a person may be in their head a lot.
Cancer- This sign is ruled by the Moon. The Moon corresponds to our emotions, our mother or mother figure, our happiness, and getting our inner needs met. When a person’s Sun is in Cancer, they are aware of their needs and can readily adapt so they can get what they need in their environment. They can focus on what inspires them in life because they're so connected to their needs and emotions. Believe it or not, people with the nurturing Sun sign can make good leaders because they are connected to the needs of others as well as the needs of the kingdom.
Stereotype #1- People with their Sun in Cancer are emotional wrecks. I’ve heard this quite a bit. Yes, their Sun sign is ruled by the Moon and the Moon corresponds to our emotions. However, the Sun and Moon are friends. The Sun is the King and the Moon is the Queen. Many Cancers may be connected to their emotions, but this doesn’t necessarily indicate an emotional wreck unless there are some afflictions to their Moon or if there are other indications for this in their natal chart. People with their Sun in Cancer seek nourishment through the pursuit of its creative inspirations, which can truly fulfill a person. This helps them to be happier in life.
Stereotype #2- People with this Sun sign are too sweet and can be a doormat. I don’t think this is true unless there are some other indications for this in their natal chart. Yes, having one’s Sun in Cancer can help a person be in touch with what makes them happy and inspired. They make great leaders and may lead differently than others because they’re attuned to what others can do and the needs of their business. They may lead in a gentle and nurturing way, and not like a tyrant, but this doesn’t make them a doormat.
Leo- When the Sun is in Leo, he’s extremely confident because he’s in his own sign. A person with this may have lots of creative power and can readily follow their inspirations. They are often proud of what they do and create, in a healthy way. If there are no afflictions to the Sun, they can make great inspiring leaders and are intelligent. They’re proud of their inspirations and follow their light, even when everything around them seems to be dim.
Stereotype #1- Leos are validation-seekers. Yes, people with their Sun in Leo often may want to be in the center of activity. The Sun rules our stomach which is located at the center of the body. They may want to be the center of attention but this isn’t a bad thing if it’s appropriate. If a person wants all of the spotlight most of the time, then this isn’t a healthy quality. A strong Sun represents a person who’s self-assured and doesn’t need to steal the spotlight from others. They can appreciate other people’s gifts and aren’t threatened because they're happy following their inspiration. A strong Sun will naturally get the validation and respect they deserve as they follow their true inspirations.
Stereotype #2- Leos are arrogant. This may be the case if the individual’s Sun is afflicted. We have to remember that having one’s Sun in Leo can cause a person to be proud because they feel they’re on the right path and have lots of inspired and creative energy flowing through them. This is a great thing! However, it can become a problem if there are afflictions to the chart. The Sun in Leo with no afflictions has noble qualities when it comes to their actions and won’t think that they’re any more important than others.
Virgo- This sign is ruled by Mercury like Gemini. Virgo is the prepubescent girl in Vedic Astrology. A prepubescent girl likes things to be clean and pure. Many girls are picky about what they eat and want to avoid getting the “cooties” at all costs. Mercury is the planet of categorizing, organizing, and being detail-oriented. This sign represents knowing the different plants to make healing remedies. Also, Virgo represents living in the mountains where there’s pure air. People often go hiking or go to the mountains to clear their heads. Mercury rules writing. Writers often like to escape the hustle and bustle and retreat to mountains, so they can write with a clear mind. A person with their Sun in this detail-oriented sign may shine when it comes to their intelligence as they are exceptional at analyzing, organizing, and perfecting.
Stereotype #1- Virgos are picky. I find this to be true, but I prefer the word, selective. This sign corresponds to the intestines. Our intestines decide what nutrients the body can use and what it can’t. The rubbish will eventually be excreted as fecal matter. This is probably why many people think they’re selective because they want to get rid of what’s not valuable to them.
Stereotype #2- Virgos are perfectionists. Mercury always travels close to the Sun. The Sun represents divine perfection and this is why Mercury is often associated with greatness. Those with their Sun in Virgo tend to want things to be exceptional because Mercury compares everything to the perfection of the Sun and strives for improvement.
Libra- This sign is ruled by Venus which has to do with the external fulfillment we can get from the world. Libra has to do with win-win situations, fairness, and getting rid of what’s not valuable. Saturn, the planet of elimination, is exalted in the sign of Libra because Libra knows how to do this best. In Vedic astrology, he represents a man with a scale at a bazaar as he trades. Libras easily see the value in things and can more readily get rid of things that don’t add value to their life or kingdom. However, the Sun is debilitated in Libra because the individual tends to find inspiration outside of himself/herself instead of from within and this goes against the essence of the Sun. But a person with this harmonious Sun sign can be just as successful in life as any other person.
Stereotype #1- Libras are too nice. Libras may come across as too friendly and too nice because this sign is ruled by Venus. Venus is the planet of the diplomat and it’s also a planet that has to do with being graceful and being aware of proper etiquette in social situations. People with their Sun in Libra can value their reputation and want to avoid coming off as abrasive.
Stereotype #2- Libras are too agreeable. Libra is a relationship-centered sign that may not want to ruffle feathers. If they’re too agreeable to you in your face, they may just value their peace. However, they know what’s of value in their life and will get rid of it if they don’t see it as valuable.
Scorpio- In Western astrology, Scorpio is often associated with Pluto, the God of the underworld. There’s often an undercurrent of feelings with Scorpio. This water sign is about wanting emotional security. In Vedic astrology, Mars rules over this sign and he fixes things. This psychological sign helps people face their demons and transmute the negative into a positive. Also, Mars assists the individual to focus their energy on their creative inspiration when their Sun is in Scorpio. This helps a person have more grit and the ability to hang on when things get hard. Also, they can shine when it comes to solving problems of all kinds.
Stereotype #1- Scorpio are emo. When people think about Scorpio, they often picture them in dark makeup and combat boots. They may rock a leather jacket and dark makeup as a way to keep people at bay. At the same time, since we’re talking about the Sun, the Sun has more to do with a person’s actions in the world, their career, and their creative self-expression, which may or may not be expressed in a dark style. Either way, I think you’ll find something profound about them. They may deal with some intense emotions or battle internal demons, or they might be intensely focused on their aspirations. With this as a person’s Sun sign, as they combat their inner demons and heal their emotional and psychological wounds, the more they can shine in their pursuits in life.
Stereotype #2- Scorpios have intense, dark emotions. Regarding being emotional, Scorpio is a water sign so a person may be in touch with their emotions. This is a sign that is extremely profound so there can be a lot that is lurking in the subconscious of these individuals that they might not even be aware of. By a person having their Sun in this sign, they may be focused on their emotional security. At the same time, to see someone’s emotions, we want to analyze their Moon in their chart.
Sagittarius- This fire sign is ruled by Jupiter, the auspicious planet of goodness and wisdom. When a person’s Sun is in Sagittarius, they can direct their goodness toward their actions and vision. They may strive to do good to make the world a better place. It may appear as though they have lucky breaks on their path and this helps their kingdom grow and prosper, or maybe it’s their wisdom that guides them on their path. Also, Sagittarius rules the upper thighs and buttocks. This helps them stay on a consistent path for a long time. They have enough fiery energy to persist against all odds to their highest potential. Additionally, building their kingdom revolves around their purpose and this brings them immense joy.
Stereotype #1- Sagittarians think they are morally superior. Having one’s Sun in this sign is a nice placement. However, some people with this can become preachy or have an air about them that they’re better than thou. This can happen if there’s some affliction to their Sun or Jupiter since Jupiter rules Sagittarius. Jupiter is the planet with lots of wisdom and he’s the opposite of being preachy. He’s joyful because he knows that everything is happening exactly how it’s supposed to be. What’s there to preach about when you’re connected to this Truth?
Stereotype #2- Sagittarians are blunt/straight shooters. In Vedic Astrology, Sagittarius represents a man on a horse with a bow and arrow. They can be very focused on their long-term vision. They may not have too much time for small talk and might want to get straight to the point because their focus is aiming toward their vision.
Capricorn- According to the Jaimini Sutras in Vedic Astrology, crocodiles represent this sign. While many animals have gone extinct throughout time, crocodiles have been able to survive. Capricorn has to do with survival. If we analyze crocodiles, they don’t do too many activities. They spend much of their time resting, which is what Saturn is about. They expend energy when they have to, especially when it’s time to devour their meal. It’s essential to preserve our energy and take action when we need to because we can’t work all the time. Having one’s Sun in Capricorn, they understand that we become successful by being patient and putting in the hard work. If you have your Sun in Capricorn, you may think about ways you can make money to survive. However, the Sun wants to go after our inspirations and not be concerned with surviving.
Stereotype #1- Capricorns are money hungry. This is an earth sign so they can be focused on their material well-being. Maintaining a healthy body and having a solid financial state is often very important to them. But they’re generally not concerned about making a ton of money to show off or to be greedy. It’s more about being able to survive through the tough times. They are adept at finding new ways to make money to ensure their material security.
Stereotype #2- Capricorns are Ice Queens or people with cold hearts. I’ve heard that even if you meet the sweetest Capricorn, you sense a coldness or distance from them. Capricorn is a complex sign. According to the Jaimini Sutras in Vedic Astrology, even though this is an earth sign, it represents the crocodile that can be on land or in the water. Water represents spiritual and emotional things. Crocodiles are often in murky waters so people Capricorns can have profound emotions. Also, this sign has to do with tackling our demons while being resourceful in this material world, which can be tricky. They’re working things out emotionally through the material world and can make strong emotional connections but in a practical way.
Aquarius- This is a sign symbolized by a man carrying an empty water jug, even though it’s an air sign. Water is a resource that all humans need. In Vedic astrology, Aquarius is ruled by Saturn. Saturn is exalted in Libra. Libra is about having win-win relationships and when we’re trading, we need to know what is valuable and what to eliminate. Worthless things are things of Saturn. Water is one thing that is invaluable and needed for our survival.
Also, a person with solid planets in this sociable sign can find what’s replenishing for the community, group, or humanity as a whole, and eliminate what isn’t. Having one’s Sun in Aquarius can allow a person to shine when it comes to finding what’s sustainable/valuable for not only communities but humanity as well. This sign is very connected to the human experience, which often includes dealing with loss, struggles, and lack, which are Saturnian things. This sign can rule science because it can be so tapped into what is needed to advance society.
Stereotype #1- Aquarians are intellectual snobs. I wouldn’t call people with this Sun sign snobs but they can be quite intelligent. Aquarius is an air sign. Air signs represent the higher power of man, which is our ability to think, reason, and inquire, as well as communicate our thoughts to others. Again, this sign is ruled by Saturn and is the last of the air signs. Aquarius represents the ability to overcome our lower nature and overcome our struggles through our higher thoughts and mindset.
Stereotype #2- Aquarians are otherworldly. People with this Sun sign can easily tap into the collective consciousness. Yes, it’s an air sign but also with water qualities. Water represents our consciousness. In Western astrology, Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, which is said to be unique because it rotates on its side. I also think Aquarius is different because Uranus is the planet that highlights one’s uniqueness, and the Sun is all about embracing our uniqueness. In other words, with this Uranus/Sun connection, a person can have breakthroughs with sparks of inspiration that seem to have come from another world.
Pisces- Pisces is a moksha or water sign that has to do with our emotions. Moksha represents liberation from the material world. Pisces represents the cleansing of our toxic emotional and psychological wounds, as well as purifying our karma. Ruled by Jupiter, Pisces is about making the right decisions inspired by goodness. This can lead to Moksha when we understand that all decisions are part of this cosmic reality we’re living in. There’s no purpose or path better than another’s. Having one’s Sun in Pisces can help a person experience joy as their virtue flows through their inspirations and they can more readily make the world a better place because of their goodness.
Stereotype #1- Pisceans are sweet but they do dirty deeds sometimes. Pisces is the last sign of the zodiac which represents the end of a karmic cycle. It symbolizes freedom from material responsibilities due to reaching enlightenment. Maybe they do dirty deeds at times because they understand consciously or subconsciously why they’re doing it and that everything is just balancing itself karmically from previous lifetimes and this lifetime as well. Pisces rules the feet, which is the dirtiest part of the body. And ruled by Jupiter, Pisces is the sign that signifies the understanding that to be enlightened, we sometimes have to tread the dirty path of life. How can we know the Light without aimlessly wandering on the dark, sinful path of ignorance? Striving to be impossibly perfect without understanding can cause a person to have problems because they’re not living a balanced life. For example, overall, it’s noble to be selfless but there’s a time to be selfish, just as long as we understand why we need to be selfish in that moment. Pisces becomes free from concepts of good and bad.
Stereotype #2- Pisceans are emotional wrecks. Pisces is about eliminating toxic emotional/psychological wounds so that one can be liberated physically and spiritually. In this process, they may purify themselves through their emotional release. A person with their Sun in Pisces may get inspiration and enlightenment from cleansing their soul and sometimes this may come in the form of experiencing the highs and lows of their emotions as the muddied water of their karma clears.
